How this calculator works

Petrol spend uses imperial UK MPG and 4.54609 litres per gallon. EV spend uses kWh/100 miles multiplied by a weighted average of home and public charging rates. Both figures assume you achieve the efficiencies you enter.

A shorter energy-only break-even does not prove an EV is cheaper overall. Consider vehicle depreciation, charging equipment, road tax, insurance and servicing in our separate running-costs calculator.

Reference: Official guidance / methodology. External rates can change.

Common questions

Do home and public percentages need to total 100?

No. Enter the home percentage and the rest is automatically allocated to public charging.

Does the EV premium include charging equipment?

Only if you include it in the extra purchase cost field. It is a user-supplied comparison, not a depreciation forecast.
